What is Competency Mapping
Some underlying characteristics are required to perform a given role, task, job, activity successfully in a given situation. These are competencies and inherent in certain individuals and can also be nurtured through a set of trainings.
In present day situation company requires employees to perform multifunctions. Set of skills relevant to the role and interaction with peers to achieve a target sucessfully are the demand of the day. Competencies are grouped as under:
- Functional: Domain knowledge, awareness of latest technology and perception.
- Behavioural (Human): Attitude, committment, communication, listening skills, decision making etc
- Managerial: Conflict management, leadership, attitude to work in a group etc.
Competencies described are indicative and not exaustive. They vary depending on the task and job roles. Once competencies required for a task are identified individuals are tested to find the level of competencies to ascertain the gap in competencies desired and design training schedules,also make market recruitment . This is competency mapping.

Competency Mapping Process
Competency Mapping provides the skill map of individual employee and indicates training requirement to grow in the career path. Skill maps are assessed in different stages as recruitment, promotion and succession planning, organisational development and posting at different stages.
There are different methods in Competency Mapping:
Pshychometric tests
It deals with behavioral science by personality test. Characteristics as general awareness, decision making, communication, analytical thinking, committment, leadership and group behaviour are assessed.
Critical skill testing
It deals with technical knowledge to match the requirement in a particular job role. Face to face interview is held to ascertain the degree of suitability of an employee in a particular job role.
360 degree inputs
The feedback received from sub-ordinates, peers, department incharge, customers and other stake holders also speak about the skill gap and performance of the employee.
Assessment Centre is the process to ascertain the skill map of individual employee and match it with the desired skill sets of a particular job role to assess suitability in the role and design further training needs. There are different tools to assess the skill set required for a particular job role.
